The Snowman Trek is an extension of the beautiful Laya Gasa Trek, and leads from Laya into high altitudes of the Bhutanese Himalayas. It takes tough and enduring trekkers into the Lunana region and further on to Gangkhar Puensum and Bumthang or down to Sephu in Trongsa district, depending on which route you choose. The Snowman trek leads through the most remote areas up to very high altitudes with the adventure in Snow.

Trekkers have to camp in altitudes above 5,000m more than once, and depending on the seasonal temperatures, the camps are sometimes on snow.

Day 1: Arrival at Paro and Explore in Paro.

On arrival at the Paro Airport, you will be received Charisma Bhutan representative who will then take you to your hotel.

  • National Museum,housed in the Ta Dzong (watchtower). Here an intriguing collection of artifacts provide a wonderful introduction to the rich culture and heritage of the Kingdom.
  • Paro Dzong, a fine example of Bhutanese historic architecture. It is also known means a “fortress that sits on a heap of jewels”. In the evening stroll through the Paro town and visit local handicraft stores.

Day 2: Paro – Hike Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest).

After breakfast drive to Taktsang base and start to hike

  • Taktsang Monastery, also known as ‘Tiger’s Nest’, its trail walks from the valley.
  • On the way visit Kichu temple,one of the 108 temples built in the 7th century by the Tibetan King Songsten Gampo.
  • Drugyel Dzong or the Fortress of Victory from where the Bhutanese repelled many Tibetan invasions. The Dzong though in ruins holds great historical importance to the Bhutanese. From there, in fine weather, one can view the majestic Mt. Jhumolhari standing at an altitude of 7329m above the sea.

Day 3: Paro – Shana and start trekking.

After breakfast drive and start trekking from Shana with distance 17Km and time cover 6 hours.

  • Drive up to the end of the road at Drugyel Dzong where the trek begins. The trail follows the river gently uphill through narrowing valley and agricultural fields of the Tsento Village.

Day 4: Shana- Soi Thangthagkha

After breakfast drive and start trekking from Shana with distance 17Km and time cover 6 hours.

  • The trail wind continues uphill following the Paro River until the valley narrows and leads to the slopes. Then it descends down into another valley.

Day 5: Soi Thangthangkha – Jangothang.

After breakfast drive and start trekking with distance 19Km and time cover 8 hours.

  • The trek is along a gradual uphill trail which passes an army outpost. Pack lunch on the way. After lunch you will be passing through the bases of many snow peaked slopes.

Day 6: Jangothang – Lingshi

After breakfast drive and start trekking with distance 19Km and time cover 8 hours.

  • Trek through wide yak pastures and beautiful snow-clad mountains. As you approach the Lingshi basin, the breathtaking view of the Lingshi Dzong can be seen. The Tsarim Gang mountain and its glaciers rise up at the north end of the valley.

Day 7: Lingshi – Chebisa.

After breakfast drive and start trekking with distance 12 Km and time cover 6 hours.

  • This is probably the shortest walking day of your trip and the walk is on a wide trail with hardly any ascends. On reaching camp one can visit the small yak herding village or take a walk to the upper end of the valley.

Day 8: Chebisa – Shomuthang

After breakfast drive and start trekking with distance 17 Km and time cover 7 hours.

  • The trek today is through wild high pastures and the trail passes through a few sparsely populated villages. You will be crossing the Gobula Pass at an altitude of 4350m.

Day 9: Shomuthang – Robluthang

After breakfast drive and start trekking with distance 15 Km and time cover 6 hours.

  • An early start is advisable as you will be crossing the Jarila Pass which stands at 4600 m above sea. Then descend down to Tsarijathang where herds of the National Animal, Takin can be seen.

Day 10: Robluthang – Laya

After breakfast drive and start trekking with distance 25 Km and time cover 9 hours.

  • After crossing the Shingela Pass at an altitude of 4900m, the trail descends to the valley beyond. On reaching Lemithang, the trail splits into two, one leading to the army camp while the other sticks to higher ground and brings one to the village of Laya.

Day 11: Exploring Laya village

A day of rest and relaxation. One can take a leisurely walk through the village or hike to the monastery above the village. Entertainment by the local dancers in the evening.

Day 12: Laya – Rodophu

After breakfast drive and start trekking with distance 18 Km and time cover 7hours.

  • The trail today follows the ancient trade route and leads one through pasture for yaks.

Day 13: Rodophu – Narithang

After breakfast drive and start trekking with distance 17 Km and time cover 6 hours.

  • The trail today also follows the alpine grassland where yaks bound in plenty and view of the surrounding mountains are absolutely breathtaking.

Day 14: Narithang – Tarina

After breakfast drive and start trekking with distance 18 Km and time cover 7 hours.

  • Today you will be crossing the highest point of your trek at the Ganglakarchung Pass at an altitude of 5100m. This is considered the highest pass in the country.

Day 15: Tarina – Woche

After breakfast drive and start trekking with distance 15 Km and time cover 6 hours.

  • The camp site marks the beginning of the Lunana region, a land known for it’s glacial lakes which brought the heavy flood in Punakha a few years ago. If you are not too tired, visit a village house.

Day 16: Woche – Lhedi

After breakfast drive and start trekking with distance 19 Km and time cover 8 hours.

  • The trail today consists of crossing the Kechela Pass at 4550m. Stop at the Thega village for rest and lunch.

Day 17: Lhedi – Thanza

After breakfast drive and start trekking with distance 18 Km and time cover 7 hours.

  • The trek is slightly easy today. En route visit the Chezo Dzong.

Day 18: Exploring Thanza

After breakfast hike and trail walking day of rest to soothe aching muscles. Explore the village and meet some locals. Short hikes can be taken around the camp.

Day 19: Thanza – Tshochena

After breakfast drive and start trekking with distance 18 Km and time cover 7 hours.

  • Another beautiful pass to cross today, namely, the Jezela pass at an altitude of 5050m.

Day 20: Tshochena – Jichu Dramo

After breakfast drive and start trekking with distance 14 Km and time cover 5 hours.

  • A relatively shorter walking day, after crossing the Lojula Pass at 4940m, the trek is easy.

Day 21: Jichu Dramo – Chukarpo

After breakfast drive and start trekking with distance 15 Km and time cover 5 hours.

  • The trail crosses the Rinchen Zoe pass at 4950m. The demarcation between the forests and the barren high altitude areas are remarkably seen from here.

Day 22: Chhukarpo – Tampetsho

After breakfast drive and start trekking with distance 20 Km and time cover 9 hours.

  • The trail crosses the Tampela Pass (4550m) and the Umtsho Lake famous for the miraculous treasure discovery by Terton Pema Lingpa in the 15 th century.

Day 23: Tampetsho – Maraothang

After breakfast drive and start trekking with distance 24 Km and time cover 5 hours.

  • The trail today is downhill till the camp which is beside the Nika Chhu River.

Day 24: Maraothang – Nika Chhu Zam

After breakfast drive and start trekking with distance 22 Km and time cover 7 hours.

  • The last day of the trek takes you through the agricultural lands and the village of Sephu.

Day 25: Nika Chhu Zam – Thimphu

After breakfast drive and start trekking with distance 10 Km and time cover 4 hours our driver and Car will be waiting us.

  • Drive to Thimphu via the lateral highway. Tea will be served at the Dochula Pass.

Day 26: explore Thimphu

After breakfast explore to Thimphu city and evening drive to Paro

  • Visit the National memorial Chorten built in the loving memory of the Late King, His Majesty, Jigme Dorji Wangchuk. Also visit the Buddha Point, Painting School and the Changangkha Lhakhang. And explore in craft bazaar with your guide for shopping if you so desire.

Day 27: Paro Departure

After breakfast drive with your guide will take you to the airport and for your onward flight.
